In-depth Analysis on Esthetic Treatments for Trans Male Faces – A Challenging yet Rewarding Realm
In our most recent session, we dove deep into an essential subject in advanced aesthetics: facial esthetic treatments for trans men. Navigating through this relatively uncharted territory, we emphasized the crucial role that medical aestheticians must play in promoting cosmetic symmetry and maintaining a healthy, natural appearance for their transgender men clients.
Our focus patient in the lecture, Athos, generously shared his experiences and challenges in his transitioning journey, which has been ongoing for eight years. The hormonal treatment Athos has been under has induced a significant reshape of his face, such as beard growth and a more linear hairline—traits considered masculine.
One striking feature of Athos’ face is how hormonal treatment led to a noticeable redistribution of facial fats, resulting in a more masculine profile despite some feminine traits. For example, he has a less projected chin, a feature often associated with femininity. Similarly, his mandibular angle, though less defined, is starting to exhibit a more masculine shape, largely due to the hormones.
Examination of Athos’ facial features further distinguished the differentiating factors between male and female faces. The thickness of his skin, emphasised by the presence of facial hair, further accentuates the masculine dimension of Athos’ face. Furthermore, characteristics like a rounded hairline and lower-placed eyebrows, mostly associated with femininity, were also notable in Athos’ case.
However, not all of Athos’ features have adapted a ‘masculine’ orientation yet. His lips, still voluptuous and full, and the presence of a cupids bow are both feminine features. His nasal angle, too, appears more on the feminine than the masculine spectrum.
It’s critical to note that gender and beauty today is highly flexible and non-binary—beauty standards have evolved as society has. Certain masculine models too carry voluptuous lips and are most attractive in their unique ways.
Stepping up to the Challenge – A Call to Medical Aestheticians
The scope and complexity of transitioning widen the opportunities for aesthetic clinics and medical aestheticians, offering another avenue of expertise and specialization. Serving transgender patients like Athos requires both technical expertise and a sensitive understanding of their unique circumstances.
Embracing this challenge enhances your practice’s value proposition and helps your clients achieve a face they feel truly reflects their inner selves. Are you prepared to include aesthetic treatments for trans men in your practice’s range of services?
